The Labor Conundrum: The H-2A program – Produce Blue Book

The current guest worker program in agriculture is the H-2A program.
Its origins go back to the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952, which created the H-2 category for temporary workers coming to the United States.
In 1986, the Immigration Reform and Control Act divided H-2 into two categories, H-2A for agricultural workers and H-2B for nonagricultural workers.

UGA grad Frank 'Mr. Peanut' McGill, who revolutionized Georgia's peanut economy, dies at 95

J. Frank McGill, affectionally known throughout the Georgia agricultural community as “Mr. Peanut,” passed away surrounded by family on March 3 at age 95 in Tifton, Georgia.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in agronomy in 1951 and a master’s degree in agronomy in 1962 from the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
He began his career with UGA as a county Extension agent in southwest Georgia and later became the state’s Extension peanut specialist. McGill worked at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station — now known as the UGA Tifton campus — and helped develop a “package approach” for peanut production, which includes management of land preparation, environmental control, variety selection and harvesting. From 1954 to 1982, McGill’s expertise helped Georgia’s peanut yields increase from 955 pounds per acre in 1955 to 2,040 pounds in 1967 and 3,220 pounds in 1974. ....

Developing heat-tolerant peanuts

Clemson University
Clemson assistant professor Sruthi Narayanan and graduate student Zolian Zoong Lwe study how heat stress affects peanuts as they work to develop heat-tolerant peanut varieties.
The latest venture focuses on how lipids (fats) in peanut plant anthers are altered by heat stress.
Heat stress caused by climate change is threatening to reduce peanut crop yields and burnout this source of income and food for millions of people worldwide.
But a group of researchers led by Clemson University Plant and Environmental Sciences assistant professor Sruthi Narayanan is working to develop heat-tolerant peanut varieties they hope will help maintain peanut production and profitability. Their latest venture focuses on how lipids (fats) in peanut plant anthers are altered by heat stress. ....
