Half of U.S. adults don’t wear masks around people outside their households
New findings from the Understanding Coronavirus in America Study measure the percentage of people who recently engaged in activities that may put them at risk of infection with COVID-19 and the portion of them who were wearing protective face masks.
The new analysis draws from survey data collected between March 10, 2020, and Jan. 6, 2021, as part of the ongoing study, which is conducted by the USC Dornsife Center for Economic and Social Research.
The analysis produced the following highlights:
Though 83% of most U.S. adults view wearing a mask as an effective way to stay safe from COVID-19, their mask-wearing behavior is very inconsistent, even while they engage in higher risk activities. There are also large differences based on race and locale. ....

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Three out of 10 Los Angeles County residents and nearly half of adults in the U.S. don t wear protective face masks when they are in close contact with people who live outside their households, according to findings released today of an ongoing study by researchers at USC.
The USC Dornsife Understanding Coronavirus in America Study found that 67% of Los Angeles County residents are likely to wear face masks when in contact with people from other households, and that 63% wear face masks while exercising outside, compared with the national average of 22%.
Los Angeles County residents were also less likely to come into contact with people outside of their households, according to researchers. ....

Health experts agree that the best way to end the COVID-19 pandemic is to vaccinate our way out of it. Unfortunately, Americans’ willingness to get a COVID-19 vaccine is waning, even as a punishing third wave claims well over 1,000 US lives each day.
The latest evidence for this appears this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association, and it shows that scepticism toward the vaccines is on the rise among Americans of all stripes.
Regardless of age, race or sex, US adults were significantly less likely to say they’d get vaccinated in late November and early December than they were in early April. And though interest in COVID-19 vaccines has waned across the board, some groups of Americans are even less willing to be vaccinated than others. ....
