.- Among the various auctions of fine and decorative arts in New York held during Americana Week, Keno Auctions attained the highest price for any lot sold. On January 23rd, an iconic bronze sculpture of Diana by Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907) soared past its estimate of $200-400,000, selling for $506,000 (including BP). Purchased by a young New York couple, it is the fifth highest price at auction for any work by Saint-Gaudens. Recently discovered by Keno, the sculpture was on display at the Glascow Arms Restaurant in Delaware since its purchase by restaurant owner and collector, Constantine Sclavos in 1959. ....

By Joanne and Fred’s own account, the Sherman portraits, above, are a centrepiece of the collection. They were painted by the itinerant New England portraitists Samuel and Ruth Shute, whose work is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Folk Art Museum.
The couple acquired the remarkable frame first. ‘It was done so well that we hung it empty on the wall,’ said Joanne, who found the portraits in East Lyme, Connecticut, three years later.
‘I have a good eye for size and said, “That pair will fit in my frame”. They didn’t need a hair shaved off to fit. Everyone who has seen them since believes that we restored them to their original frame.’ ....

.- For more than 70 years, Léone Meyers family has fought to reclaim a looted painting, and yet she cannot bear the thought of displaying it in her Left Bank home, across from the River Seine. The small work, by Camille Pissarro, shows a shepherdess tending her flock, and hangs not far away at the Musée dOrsay, with other precious French impressionist paintings. But the peaceful countryside scene from 1886 is fraught with a backstory of plunder, family tragedy and legal battles that stretch from Paris to Oklahoma. Meyers mother, grandmother, uncle and brother died in Auschwitz. Her father hid the painting in a French bank that was looted in 1941 by the Nazis, and the work vanished in the murky universe of art market collaborators and middlemen. Decades later, in 2012, she discovered the whereabouts of La Bergère, or Shepherdess Bringing in Sheep, in the Fred Jones Jr. Museu ....
