After rising all the way to the No. 2 spot in the nation, the 2020 Florida Gators gymnastics team was devastated to find out that their season would be canceled due to COVID-19. One of the gymnasts who felt this the most was Amelia Hundley. The senior, and four-time All-American, would not have a chance to win a national title with her team as a gymnast. Despite this, she was not quite ready to leave Gator Gymnastics. This season, Hundley has returned to the team as a student coach, guiding the same gymnasts she called a teammate just a year prior. Time as a gymnast ....
Special report on the Florida Gators gymnastics: GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The top-ranked Gators stepped up to the challenge for missing teammates, winning tonight’s dual meet 197.50 – 196.875 over No. 15 Kentucky Friday in front of physically-distanced sellout Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center crowd of 2,182. COVID-19 protocols presented a challenge for Florida tonight. Gator gymnasts who performed eight routines in last Friday’s win at No. 2 LSU – Sydney Johnson-Scharpf, Nya Reed, Savannah Schoenherr and Trinity Thomas – were sidelined tonight due to COVID 19 tests and contact tracing. Denied last year’s title chase, Florida gymnastics enters 2021 with championship dreams Share this story One long national nightmare is over, anyway. This Friday, the Florida Gators team is in Auburn, set to open a season that, thanks to COVID-19, is abbreviated, with teams only competing within the SEC to reduce travel. One thing will be familiar, at least in a sense: For the first time during Jenny Rowland’s tenure as head coach, the Gators start the season ranked No. 1, just edging out the Oklahoma Sooners, where they perched to finish last year’s COVID-shortened season. The rest is going to be strange. Each of the SEC’s squads will compete in eight dual meets over 10 weeks, with two bye weeks with not all of the SEC fielding gymnastics programs, this means some teams will double up, and Florida will compete against Auburn twice, once away and once at home. This is in contrast to a normal regular season, which would see the Gators compete in around 12 ....

Then, March 17 swept in like a typical Florida summer thunderstorm. The team went from 14 hours of tutoring and training for the SEC and the NCAA Championship to nothing, former senior Amelia Hundley said. ....
