Amazonians United: A new trap for workers

Amazonians United: A new trap for workers
Last month, the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) lost its unionization vote at the Amazon warehouse in Bessemer, Alabama by a more than two-to-one margin. The RWDSU, which relied on the backing of the Biden administration, Democratic members of Congress and even right-wing Republican Senator Marco Rubio, was incapable of generating any significant support from workers.
As the
World Socialist Web Site has explained in a numberofarticles analyzing the RWDSU union drive, from the outset the effort was a top-down operation, an initiative of the Democratic Party and AFL-CIO, rather than an expression of workers’ opposition from below. The Democrats have made a calculated decision that the unions, having proven themselves reliable caretakers of corporate interests, must be provided further institutional support, so they may better serve as a brake on the class struggle and keep it from developing in a more rad ....

Amazon after Bessemer

Unions are just one element of a broader vision for transforming the company. Cross-class coalitions forged during the pandemic point the way forward with a radical vision of worker and community control.
Before the dust could even settle in Bessemer, Alabama, Amazon went in for the kill. Just a few hours after the widely covered union drive failed on April 9, an Amazon-sponsored coalition of major tech companies put out a press release calling the outcome a “progressive success story.” It was a line Amazon repeated throughout the campaign, even as it engaged in vicious union busting tactics. Dave Clark, CEO of Amazon’s Worldwide Consumer unit, went so far as to tweet, “I often say we are the Bernie Sanders of employers, but that ....

Amazon's European workers are plotting action on an epic scale

Andreas Gangl joined Amazon in 2009 aged 36, to work at one of the company’s cavernous fulfilment centres in Bad Hersfeld, a small spa town in central Germany. At first the job was pretty good: pay was comparable to other manual roles, and a day’s workload, printed out on paper, consisted mostly of packaging books and CDs.
In 2013 Bad Hersfeld became the first Amazon fulfilment centre in Germany to unionise. Two years later, led by Gangl’s coworker Christian Krähling, it was the founding place of Amazon Workers International (AWI), an organisation that has members in 175 fulfilment centres worldwide. ....

Ballots go out in Amazon union battle in Alabama

Ballots are being sent out Monday in one of the most significant union elections of the last decade, as workers at an Amazon warehouse in Alabama choose whether to unionize.
The almost 6,000 workers in Bessemer, Ala., will vote on whether to form what would be the first union at one of the e-commerce giant’s American operations.
“The importance of this vote transcends this one facility,” said Stuart Applebaum, president of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, which would represent the warehouse if a majority of votes cast go its way.

“Amazon is transforming industry after industry, and, especially given its size, is determining what the future of work will look like,” he added in an interview with The Hill. ....
