$2M project to expand broadband internet in Wellington County complete


 
WELLINGTON COUNTY
A $2 million broadband internet expansion in rural Wellington County is complete, bringing high-speed internet to more than 270 houses and businesses in the Yatton, Creek Bank and Goldstone communities.
“More people in Wellington now have access to fast, reliable internet service,” Agriculture Minister Ernie Hardeman (PC-Oxford) said in a release. This is an important step forward in our plan to deliver broadband that supports better educational opportunities, attracts more businesses and create jobs in Wellington County.”
The expansion was led by the Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT) project, a municipally-led, non-profit established by the Western Ontario Wardens Caucus in 2014. ....

Anonymous hotline urged in coroner review of farm worker COVID deaths

Warning that migrant farm workers are more vulnerable to COVID-19 because of their communal living and working conditions, a new coroner’s report offers 35 recommendations to protect them from the increased risks they face daily.
The report from Ontario’s deputy chief coroner, released Tuesday, follows the death last year of three Temporary Foreign Workers in Southwestern Ontario.

Chair, vice chair re-elected to lead OFVGA - Greenhouse Canada


The Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers’ Association (OFVGA) has re-elected familiar faces to lead the organization.
Grape grower Bill George Jr. has been elected to a third one-year term as Chair of the OFVGA, along with apple grower Charles Stevens who was re-elected as Vice Chair.
Both George and Stevens first assumed their respective roles in 2019 and were re-elected at the OFVGA annual general meeting held virtually on February 16.

“COVID-19 has made the last year one for the history books; I’m honoured to serve my fellow growers for another year as chair of their organization and bring their issues and concerns to the attention of policymakers at all levels of government,” says George. “I’m proud of the relationships we’ve built across our industry and with government to help us get through the pandemic so far, and I look forward to continuing that work as we look ahead to this coming growing season and post-pandemic recovery.” ....
