Grenfell fire survivors condemn government's 'indefensible' Fire Safety Bill

GRENFELL fire survivors and bereaved families today condemned the Tory government’s “indefensible” Fire Safety Bill, which leaves hundreds of thousands of leaseholders facing crippling bills for the removal of dangerous cladding.
The legislation, introduced following the tower block blaze in west London in 2017, which killed 72 people, is set to become law after a final push to amend it was defeated in the House of Lords on Wednesday night.
Although the government had insisted that leaseholders would not bear the cost of removing the flammable materials, campaigners warned that the legislation would leave people liable for costs of up to £50,000. ....

Ministers stump up cladding cash to quell Tory rebellion

Downing Street plans to provide more cash to those faced with the cost of fixing unsafe cladding in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire.
It comes as Tory MPs accused ministers of incompetence in their response to the crisis, with politicians from all parties warning more leaseholders will go bankrupt if urgent action is not taken.
Hundreds of thousands of leaseholders face average costs of £40,000 each – and some of up to £115,000 – to replace dangerous cladding, similar to that found on the Grenfell Tower in Kensington, west London, where an inferno killed 72 people in June 2017.
Conservative MPs have urged the Government to act quickly to stop flat owners from being forced to pay for the removal of this material from their homes.     ....

People living in rented homes in England could automatically be allowed to keep well-behaved pets under new measures announced by the government.
Housing Minister Chris Pincher said the new model tenancy agreement will stop landlords banning all animals.
It is not legally binding, but ministers hope landlords will adopt it.
They say only 7% of private landlords advertise pet-friendly properties, meaning many people have to give up their companions to find a home.
The RSPCA, which has campaigned for the change, said it was a big step forward for pet owners. ....
