Good offtake continues on the export front, say traders
Turmeric prices have dropped across various agricultural produce marketing committee (APMC) yards in the country mainly on account of slack demand.
“Turmeric prices are down as there is no demand because traders fear a fresh lockdown due to rise in Covid-19 cases could result in stockists’ purchases dropping,” said Nizamabad-based trader Amrutlal Kataria.
Prices have declined by about ₹1,000 a quintal at various APMCs in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra. Prices in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra have slid to below ₹7,400 from about ₹8,400 at the start of the month. ....

Arrival of fresh turmeric and increase in demand has pushed the price of turmeric to ₹10,000 a quintal at the regulated markets here.
Known for its curcumin content that range from 2.5% to 4.5%, the crop is grown is over 10,200 acres at Erode, Modakkurichi, Kodumudi, Bhavani, Anthiyur and Gobichettipalayam areas and is auctioned at the Erode and Perundurai regulated markets and also at the Agricultural Producers Cooperative Marketing Societies at Karungalpalayam in Erode and at Gobichettipalayam.
While the old turmeric was auctioned for less than ₹6,000 a quintal all these years, new turmeric fetched around ₹7,000 a quintal. Hence, large quantities of turmeric were stocked in godowns and were brought to the markets when price improved. ....

No demand for shipments at current prices of around ₹9,000, say traders
Export prospects of turmeric have been affected following a 30 per cent increase in its prices since the beginning of this month across various primary agricultural markets in the country.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare data, turmeric prices increased to ₹8,294 a quintal for the finger variety on Friday at Erode in Tamil Nadu as against ₹6,250 on February 2. Prices of the bulb variety increased to ₹7,649 from ₹5,994 during the same period.
On NCDEX, April contracts for delivery from Nizamabad increased from ₹6,402 a quintal to ₹8,420.27 and May contracts from ₹6,480 to ₹8,439.90 during the period. Nizamabad and Erode are the primary trading centres for turmeric in the country. ....

ERODE: Turmeric farmers hope for a brighter future with prices of the yellow spice increasing steadily after a gap of nine years. Prices have gone up from Rs 5,500 to Rs 8,000 per quintal since the first week of February due to low arrivals, farmers said. They hope it will cross Rs 12,000 on account of growing demand.
The usual business was delayed due to unexpected rain during the Pongal festival, said M Sathyamurthy, secretary of the Erode Turmeric Merchants and Godown Owners Association. “Due to rain, harvesting was delayed. Farmers started harvesting only in the third week of January,” he told TOI. “We started business from February first week and are expecting good business in the coming months.” ....
