The Ontario-born musician immortalized the lake’s vengeful fury, and Canada’s best-known shipwreck, in his enduring ballad, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. There have been well over 6,000 shipwrecks in the Great Lakes which caused an estimated loss of 30,000 mariner’s (sailors) lives. It is believed that there are over 500 wrecks in Lake Superior, most of which are undiscovered.
By far the most famous shipwreck in the history of the Great Lakes was the giant freighter Edmund Fitzgerald, which has become truly legendary in large part due to a haunting ballad written and sung by Canadian Gordon Lightfoot. The song is called “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”
Five hundred years from now they will still be playing that song around the Great Lakes every November. The Fitzgerald went down on November 10, 1975 in a hurricane-like storm on Lake Superior. The entire crew of 29 men perished. When the Fitzgerald was built in 1958 it was the largest ship on the entire Great Lakes. It remains the largest ship to ever sink on the Great Lakes.
