Each year, there are more than 3 million cases of suspected child abuse in the United States. In New Jersey, 48,000 children are under state supervision because of threats to their safety and welfare.

After 25 years working in the field of forensic science and over two decades of executive experience as a laboratory director, Kathleen Corrado has been named director of the Forensic and National Security Science Institute (FNSSI) in the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S).

Corrado began her career studying molecular genetics, researching gene regulation and protein function in muscular dystrophy. She received a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Connecticut in 1986, a Ph.D. in biology from the University of Michigan in 1992 and completed two post-doctoral research fellowships: the first at the University of Michigan Medical School’s Department of Human Genetics, and the second at the University of Texas at Austin. ....

Kentucky State Police Forensic Labs Adopt Rigorous Standards

Kentucky State Police (KSP) Forensic Laboratories were recently recognized by a nationally renowned organization called ‘Organization of Scientific Area Committees’ (OSAC) for voluntarily adopting rigorous standards in the analysis of seized drugs. KSP labs are one of the first lab systems in the country to adopt these standards.
The OSAC organization exists to be the gold standard in scientific testing, protocols and best practices to help ensure forensic analysis is reliable and reproducible.
KSP employs 30 lab personnel who are specifically assigned to drug analysis located across the state at six separate labs. These facilities receive evidence from every law enforcement agency in the Commonwealth and on average, forensic scientists complete a total of nearly 30,000 drug cases every year. ....
