5 Year Plan on Disabilities

MONTGOMERY – Time is running out for public input on the Alabama Council on Developmental Disabilities (ACDD) five-year state plan. Individuals have two weeks left to comment regarding the 2022-2026 plan draft goals and objectives regarding such areas as education and early intervention; employment; formal and informal community supports; and health. The ACDD state plan can be read at www.acdd.org. The website has an option to translate the plan into other languages.
The ACDD is responsible for developing a state plan, which guides the efforts of the Council. Consistent with federal requirements, the draft state plan goals and objectives are being released for a 45-day public comment period ending midnight June 2, 2021. ....

Trussville PD participates in autism and developmental disability training

TRUSSVILLE An organization that provides training to law enforcement on how to handle cases involving those with special needs, made a visit to Trussville on Tuesday, March 9, 2021.
Interaction Advisory Group (IAG) conducted the training on autism and developmental disability, with the Trussville Police Department. The training took place at the Trussville Civic Center.
Nearly one in five people live with special needs. Co-founder of IAG, Dustin Chandler, said the chance of first responders encountering those with special needs increases every day.
“Officers are going to encounter it, so what is the best way to keep that person safe, treat them fairly and have the best outcome that we can? That is what we are looking at,” Chandler explained. “When you get to know that community and have a personal connection with that community, you really see the struggles of everyday life.” ....

Educational campaign aimed at vulnerable population

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that in the United States, people with disabilities are 4 to 10 times more likely to be victimized than people without them and children with disabilities are more than twice as likely to be victimized as children without them.
January is recognized as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Homeland Security Investigations in Alabama estimates the commercial sex industry generates $110 million each year in the Birmingham metro area, which does not include illegal activity in strip clubs or illicit massage parlors, nor child trafficking, which is more difficult to quantify.
To address this issue, the Alabama Council on Developmental Disabilities has tapped Fowler Davis, LLC to produce an educational campaign for trafficking of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. ....
