Great music, performed well, is for everyone.
“And I believe everyone deserves it,” insisted Meaghan Heinrich, education curator for the Grand Teton Music Festival. “And that everyone has the capacity to understand it.”
It takes matching the right piece of music with the right audience — and tailoring the way it’s presented to the target audience’s world.
“If I go into a fifth grade classroom and play Beethoven’s 7th, some students might like it,” said Heinrich. “But if I go in and have them teach me a TikTok chant they know and we notate it and we see that the rhythm is the same as the rhythm of the main motive of Beethoven’s 7th,” well, then, she said, listeners not only have a basis on which to understand and appreciate Beethoven, but they can listen to their own music on a deeper level and appreciate it even more. ....

1871  –City of Birmingham founded; now the state’s most populous city, Birmingham was founded at the crossing of two rail lines near one of the world’s richest deposits of minerals.
1873 Birmingham becomes seat of Jefferson County.
–First Colored Baptist Church founded.
Birmingham particularly hard hit by cholera due to the lack of urban infrastructure and the poor housing conditions. At least 128 people died from cholera, which struck in the height of summer and persisted for several weeks. The outbreak caused about half of Birmingham’s 4,000 residents to flee.
1874 – Birmingham Iron Age newspaper in publication.

The American Solti Foundation announced the young American conductors who have been selected as 2021 recipients of The Sir Georg Solti Career Assistance Award. They are, Assistance Award (in alphabetical order) are conductors:
Nathaniel Efthimiou, founding Music Director of Orchestra Contempo, Assistant Conductor, Boston Civic Symphony, Assistant Director of Music at Boston’s historic Park Street Church and acting Assistant Conductor, Rhode Island Philharmonic;
Kevin Fitzgerald, Assistant Conductor of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra, he is also the founder of the Michigan-based contemporary music ensemble ÆPEX Contemporary Performance; ....

The 2020-21 season has been a time of joy and sadness. Our Foundation has lost a shining light, Lady Valerie Solti, who passed away earlier this season. Her committment to her late husband s legacy and joy in helping up and coming musicians in the conducting world made our Foundation a reality. Alabama Symphony’s Carlos Izcaray composes virtual symphony for ASFA students

Early on in the COVID-19 crisis, Carlos Izcaray, music director of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, composed a piece for the American Youth Symphony, where he’s also music director.
“It was written for a virtually recorded ensemble,” the maestro says. “We recorded it remotely.”
As the pandemic continued, administrators and faculty at the Alabama School of Fine Arts were looking for ways to engage their students, and they reached out to Izcaray for ideas involving their music students.
“I said, ‘Well, I just did this kind of project,’” he recalls. “’We could do something similar with ASFA and explore this new way of generating something for this internet medium that we’re all watching now.” ....
