Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - A small crowd of uniformed law enforcement officers and civilians gathered at Evergreen Cemetery for the annual Police Memorial Wreath Laying Ceremony on Friday at noon.
The event was held to honor officers who have fallen in the line of duty. President of Juneau s chapter of the Alaska Peace Officers Association and Juneau Police Department officer Kirt Stage-Harvey began the ceremony and Pastor Sam Dalin delivered an opening prayer. Lt. Matt Dobson of the Alaska State Troopers read the names of fallen Southeast Alaska law enforcement officers. Deputy chief of JPD, David Campbell, also made remarks. ....

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The acting mayor of Anchorage appointed the city’s acting chief of police Friday morning.
Acting Mayor Austin Quinn-Davidson chose Deputy Chief of Police Kenneth McCoy to replace Police Chief Justin Doll upon his leave before official retirement. The change will go into effect at 8 a.m. Monday.
McCoy has served in the city police force for nearly three decades. He has worked in the patrol division, detective division and internal affairs. He has been serving as deputy chief for four years. ....

Cops, EMS Say They Need New Training Facility

As North Pole’s police chief, Steve Dutra wants to keep current with firearms and emergency preparedness training. But getting the right conditions is difficult. There is a public outdoor range on South Cushman Street near the Tanana River, but training there means closing it to recreational users. And other local ranges, even on military bases, don’t allow such actions as drawing from a holster, or firing from a kneeling or prone position.
“Eielson and Fort Wainwright both have restrictions on their ranges. And we have hundreds of law-enforcement officers in this area, federal, state and local, and there’s not a facility around that can manage all of those agencies, all the requirements, with the facilities they have.” ....

In a letter on Dec. 1, Frank Rast suggested that the Municipality of Anchorage sell the Egan Center to the Native Village of Eklutna to make the property a reservation so they could open a casino downtown. We hope his suggestion was in jest, but on the chance it was not, the Anchorage Chapter of the Alaska Peace Officers Association, or APOA, Board of Directors would like to say that we believe there is nothing wrong with the status quo of charitable gaming in Alaska.
Those who wish to play games of chance are afforded that opportunity in a regulated environment that is absent the noise level, volume of alcohol consumption, and higher stakes. The availability of gambling has always been alluring for some, and often it is those who can least afford it that are prone to lose the most. When the stakes are higher, the damage is greater to those who can ill afford the losses. ....
