Locals raise concerns about proposed subdivision project


Many local residents have expressed concerns that a recently proposed development project near Spruce Cape could negatively impact the quality of life for residents in the surrounding areas. 
Their concerns were aired at a meeting organized on behalf of Natives of Kodiak Inc., the Alaska Native Urban Corporation that owns the land. The corporation is seeking to develop 58 single-home units on 25 acres of land just south of the Spruce Cape trailhead. 
On Wednesday, DOWL, the engineering company hired to develop the land, met with community members on an online Zoom call to explain the project and hear the concerns of local residents.  ....

Cops, EMS Say They Need New Training Facility

As North Pole’s police chief, Steve Dutra wants to keep current with firearms and emergency preparedness training. But getting the right conditions is difficult. There is a public outdoor range on South Cushman Street near the Tanana River, but training there means closing it to recreational users. And other local ranges, even on military bases, don’t allow such actions as drawing from a holster, or firing from a kneeling or prone position.
“Eielson and Fort Wainwright both have restrictions on their ranges. And we have hundreds of law-enforcement officers in this area, federal, state and local, and there’s not a facility around that can manage all of those agencies, all the requirements, with the facilities they have.” ....

Queensland s border has snapped closed to Perth just hours after the state s tourism minister launched a new campaign to attract interstate tourists but offered them no guarantees they wouldn t be locked out.
Amid revelations Queensland lost out on $200 million of tourist spending when it closed to Greater Sydney in January, it was last night announced travellers from Perth and its surrounds would now need to hotel quarantine following a COVID-19 case of community transmission there.
It came as the federal government again called on the Palaszczuk Government to do more to shape consistent rules around border closures for travellers. ....
