Peter Pan statue to be reinstated in Newton Means after community concern
A MUCH-LOVED Peter Pan statue will be reinstated within the grounds of a future development of homes.
Dundas Estates, which is to redevelop land of the former Mearnskirk House, in Newton Mearns, has temporarily placed a memorial featuring the character into safe storage during demolition works.
But after concerns were raised by the community over its long-term future, the developer has pledged to give the statue pride of place again.

Created in memory of Dr John A Wilson OBE, the physician superintendent of the former sanatorium from 1929 to 1946, the statue was first unveiled to a large crowd three years after his death as a fitting memorial to reflect the stories he told children on the wards. It was created by renowned sculptor Alexander Proudfoot. ....

David Allan Oyster was born January 30, 1939 in East Liverpool, Ohio to Frank and Mildred Oyster. He spent his young years in East Liverpool and upon graduating high school he joined the United States Navy before marrying Margaret Scott with whom he recently celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Dave attended Kent State University and graduated with a degree in Business and Economics. He began his career at Ford Motor Company moving his little family to Michigan. His pinnacle years were with Alexander Proudfoot which afforded him the opportunity to travel the world.
He loved his family, music, sports, a warm, sunny-sandy beach, golfing with his buddies and sharing a beer, telling a great story, enjoying a fine meal and an expensive wine. He was a sharp-dressing, ambitious, hardworking man and an amazing provider. DR John A Wilson OBE was the physician superintendent of Mearnskirk Hospital, Newton Mearns, from 1929 to 1946. He took a great interest in the welfare of its children.
The Glasgow Corporation-owned hospital, for children suffering from tuberculosis, was officially opened in October 1932 by the then-Duchess of York, the late Queen Mother. “In these open-air pavilions, built to catch every ray of sunshine,” she said, “the patients have every chance to recover.”
A video that can be viewed on the website of Mearns History Group says that Dr Wilson was highly popular, especially with the young patients, to whom he liked to tell the story of Peter Pan. “It was his wish to have erected in the hospital grounds a statue to Peter Pan; he mentioned this to his friend Alfred Ellsworth, a Glasgow businessman who was a frequent benefactor to Mearnskirk Hospital.” ....
