Ontario Native Women’s Association (ONWA) is full steam ahead with events for Mental Health Week.
With high percentages of Indigenous persons reporting worsening mental health since the start of Covid-19, specifically Indigenous women with 46 per cent experiencing more stressful days and 48 per cent experiencing symptoms consistent with moderate or severe generalized anxiety disorder, these events couldn’t come at a better time.

Wisdom: ONWA kicks off Mental Health Week with welcoming circle


Monday was the start of events for the Ontario Native Women’s Association Mental Health Week, and participants were welcomed with open arms.
“Todays opening prayer and welcoming circle was truly an amazing experience. With over 960 views and participants from across Ontario it was a positive kick-off to ONWA s Mental Health Week campaign,” says Niemi Himes, mental health worker and the events lead liaison.
Audrey DeRoy guided the introductory circle hosted via Zoom and Facebook live and opened the circle up for sharing, leading to vulnerable honesty and conversation from participants.
“I would like to thank Al Hunter and Audrey DeRoy for opening and guiding our sharing circle, if it was not for their knowledge, wisdom, healing teachings and songs today s circle would not have been possible,” says Himes. ....

ONWA is supporting Mental Health Week with virtual programming.
This week Ontario Native Women’s Association is kicking off a week of events to highlight the importance of mental health.
“This week s events are truly a team effort and would not be possible without the support of ONWA s leadership and staff, their contributions are the foundation of this upcoming week and I would like to thank everyone for their tireless efforts and support,” says Niemi Himes, Mental Health worker and lead liaison of ONWA’s Mental Health Week Activities.
