At 8:13 p.m. on Tuesday, June 22 an officer with the New Ulm Police Department initiated a traffic stop for a vehicle equipment violation in the 500 block of 7th South St. in New Ulm. Two additional New Ulm police officers arrived moments later to assist if needed.
During the encounter, the initial officer suspected the vehicle driver, Ryan Steinbach, 36, of Fairfax, was possibly impaired. While attempting to investigate this matter, Steinbach became non-compliant and then combative. During the ensuing struggle, Steinbach produced a handgun that was in his possession and made suicidal related statements to officers. As officers struggled to take the handgun from Steinbach, Steinbach shot himself.

Jury trial begins for Mankato man accused of criminal sex | News, Sports, Jobs

NEW ULM — A jury trial for a 19-year-old Mankato man accused of three counts of criminal sexual conduct at the New Ulm Econo Lodge last August began in Brown County District Court Tuesday. Jury selection was held and a jury of seven women and five men was seated.
Malachi H. Rodriguez, 408 W. 7th St., Mankato, faces felony third and fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct charges plus a gross misdemeanor fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct charge.
According to the complaint, New Ulm Police talked with a man Aug. 12, 2020, who said his daughter said she was sexually assaulted by Rodriguez on Aug. 8, 2020, at the Econo Lodge. The man said his daughter initially didn’t want to tell anyone about the assault because she was afraid about spoiling a family wedding in New Ulm.

• Responded to a three-vehicle crash with minor injuries on Highland Avenue and Oak Street at 3:03 p.m. May 5. Road conditions were wet. Sydney Owens, 16, New Ulm, was driving a 2017 Ford northbound when she said she sneezed, causing her to strike the rear end of a 2003 Toyota driven by Carter Lang, 17, New Ulm, who was also northbound. The impact caused the Toyota to strike the rear of a 2008 Dodge driven by Kaylee Hutchinson, 18, New Ulm. Owens and Hutchinson reported minor injuries. Damage was minor to all three vehicles. All three drivers wore seat belts.
• Received information about an argument over a water leak at Traulich Estates, 2201 N. Broadway, at 10:15 a.m. May 5. A report was sent to police investigators.

• Received a harassment report from a 45-year-old Redwood Falls man at 301 Water St. N. at 6:31 p.m. May 1. The man said a 48-year-old Springfield man was harassing him. He was advised to apply for a harassment restraining order. A report was done for documentation.
• Stopped an 18-year-New Ulm man for failing to signal a turn at Franklin St. N. at 1st St. N. at 7:37 p.m. May 1. Police smelled marijuana, searched the vehicle and found marijuana edibles and drug paraphernalia including two grinders. A report was sent to the Brown County Attorney’s Office.

NEW ULM — A 39-year-old New Ulm woman faces three felony charges including receiving more than $5,000 worth of stolen property stemming from a March stolen vehicle and stolen property case in New Ulm and Blue Earth County.
Two counts of felony possession of ammunition or firearm, liable for crimes of another and one count of felony receiving more than $5,000 worth of stolen property, were filed against Thea M. Spillane, 322 State St. N., in Brown County District Court May 3. A first appearance was set for 8:30 a.m., June 1.
According to court documents, the Blue Earth County Sheriff contacted New Ulm Police March 8, regarding a stolen vehicle and stolen property located at 322 State St. N.

• Charges of felony fifth-degree drug possession-not small amount of marijuana, gross misdemeanor obstruct legal process-interfere with police officer, misdemeanor trespass were filed April 27 against Jesse J. Barnhart, 31, 406 Broadway, Hanska.
His bail was set at $10,000 without conditions Tuesday. An omnibus hearing was set for 8:30 a.m. June 1.
According to court documents, New Ulm Police were dispatched to a report of a person breaking into a residence at on the 900 block of N. Garden St. at 2:24 a.m. Police saw Barnhart walking south on Garden St. sidewalk near 8th North. Barnhart said he was staying with a friend down the road, went for a walk, the next thing he knew, he woke up in a house he didn’t recognize.
