Here’s one thing the pandemic couldn’t ruin.
Salt City Market finally opens on Friday, Jan. 29, to much anticipation and fanfare from downtown dwellers, workers and food lovers across Central New York.
It fills a long-empty corner lot with a modern, mixed-use structure that houses apartments, offices and a gleaming new food hall featuring cake, coffee, pies, fresh juices, flowers and food from around the world: Burma, Jamaica, Thailand, Iraq, Vietnam and the American South.
But it’s not just a shiny new building.
It’s one thing to say diversity matters. It is far more impactful and compelling to invest in diversity, to elevate and celebrate it. ....

Twelve years ago, Adam Sudmann sat in his Brooklyn apartment sketching out models for a multinational food hall. And on Friday, those sketches will come to fruition in downtown Syracuse.
Salt City Market, at 484 South Salina Street, is set to open at 11 a.m. on Friday and features food vendors with cuisines from around the world. The market was designed to model various food halls across the country and has 11 different food vendors.
Sudmann said that the market wouldn’t have been created without the Allyn Family Foundation. The foundation created the Syracuse Urban Partnership for projects like Salt City Market, and about a quarter of the foundation’s endowment went to the project. ....

To the Editor:
In response to the crisis facing the arts sector in Central New York caused by the pandemic, CNY Arts has been in the process of raising $1M for the CNY Arts Covid-19 Impact Fund. This initiative, which is almost half-way to its goal, has and will continue to provide emergency funding for arts agencies and artists in Cayuga, Cortland, Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, and Oswego counties.
CNY Arts would like to thank its many community partners for their role in the success of this fund drive so far. We are gratified at the number of supporters, including businesses and individuals too numerous to mention here.  As we look back at the first six months of this effort, our organization is especially appreciative of the challenge grants provided by The Central New York Community Foundation, The Dorothy and Marshall M.
