Communities hope to combat record drug overdose deaths reported amid coronavirus pandemic

Isolation, anxiety, stress and the fear of contracting COVID-19 created barriers to treatment, according to addiction experts.
Hard-hit communities across the U.S. hope to combat the rising number of fatal overdoses as the nation reached a morbid milestone in the drug epidemic: Drug overdose deaths soared to a record 93,000 in 2020, according to provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
That marks a 29.4% increase from 2019.
In Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, home to Pittsburgh, the rate of overdose deaths noticeably surpassed Keystone State’s rate, which 16% to 5,172.

Opioids were involved in 92% of the county’s accidental overdose deaths in the first and second quarter of 2020, on average, according to the Allegheny County Department of Health and Human Services. ....

When factoring out those ineligible for the vaccine, that share rises to 14.1%.
Those numbers include both data from the Pennsylvania Department of Health and Philadelphia’s Department of Health, which keep separate records when it comes to vaccinations in the state. As of Monday, the state is reporting 1,282,679 people have received both doses, while Philadelphia is reporting 142,952 more for a total of 1,425,631. ....

Rural Pennsylvania struggles to cope with COVID-19 surge | News, Sports, Jobs

Passing the cremation oven, still hot from the morning’s use, Burke changed from his plastic embalming apron to a necktie and collared shirt as Sunday football commentators bantered on the television. As he prepared the hearse outside, his phone rang again. Second body pickup needed at a nursing home outside Lewistown. Coronavirus again. ....
