The dictionary does not define a “wife” as a “servant” or a “slave”. Fixing your fat backside on a couch, legs on the centre table, eyes glued to the TV, gulping down some drink, while Slave Wife is doing everything in the house is so old-fashioned that it is shameful. As high and mighty as you are, your hand will not change colour if you dust the dining table or cut the vegetables while she is cooking. Be a partner. Not a taskmaster! Haba!

It is not difficult to see the depressing spectacle as you worm your way into the womb of the state with an estimated 22 million people, from the Berger end of the endlessly rehabilitated Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, and traverse its aquatic landscape, The expressway, as important as it is to the nation’s economy, has taken the whole of the last 22 years, involving all the administrations that have ruled the country since then, to fix. Every New Sheriff in Town comes with a new completion date that never happens. Agony subsists. Incidentally, the Abeokuta end of its entry point isn’t exciting either.

There are words that have been given different meanings in Nigeria. Sometimes, the meaning given to these words is even the opposite of their original meaning. Let us look at 10 of these words.
fatal
WRONG: I witnessed a fatal accident this morning in which the vehicles were damaged beyond repair; but surprisingly, no life was lost. It was a miracle.
The word ”fatal” means “causing or resulting in death.” If death is not involved in an accident, then, it is not fatal.
RIGHT: I witnessed a ghastly (or near-fatal) accident this morning in which the vehicles were damaged beyond repair; but surprisingly, no life was lost. It was a miracle.
