The Sound of Identity - The Cambridge Student

On Thursday last week, Britain got to enjoy the nationwide electoral celebration that was ‘Super Thursday’. We then got to endure an entire weekend of thrilling, adrenaline-fuelled news coverage as England became just a bit bluer than before; Scotland a little yellower with a few flecks of green; and Wales a bit redder and a bit less pink, and ultimately we got to see by the end that nothing much had really changed. These most recent elections were, in many ways, so conventionally uninteresting they seemed to have been forgotten before they even took place (in the Hartlepool by-election, turnout was 42.7% – some 15% below the 2019 election, and in the most recent Airdrie and Shotts by-election it was as low as 34.3%). ....

It came fully 35 years after the formation of the group in 1979. But, in fairness, there were mitigating circumstances for the delay.
“The band had split up, so when that happens it’s very difficult to record anything, let alone an album,” King recalls.
Even so, the consensus was that the Lonewolves had been given umpteen chances to realise their potential, but had consistently blown it.
I’m not sure why, for a string of periodic singles – including the stunning Texas Lullaby in 1983 – underlined that King was relevant musically. ....

The 50 Greatest UK Indie Records Of All Time

09 02 2021
INSPIRED BY PUNK, angered by Thatcher and in love with ’60s culture, the UK indie scene produced some of the greatest (and oddest) pop records of all time. It all began on December 28, 1976 at Indigo Studios on Gartside Street in Manchester. The Buzzcocks had just recorded and mixed four songs destined for the Spiral Scratch EP. A month later the EP would be released on the band’s own New Hormones label, in the process spawning a scene of musicians, songwriters and labels hell-bent on doing it for themselves. Forged in the political turmoil of the late ’70s and early ’80s, labels such as Postcard, Creation, Factory, Zoo and Rough Trade emerged as maverick flag-bearers of a new eclectic indie aesthetic. The DIY revolution had begun and British pop would never be the same again. ....
