Ambassadorial appointment: Why ex-service chiefs are yet to be deployed

The immediate former service chiefs are yet to be deployed to Nigeria’s diplomatic posts overseas because the federal government is yet to receive agreemo from the host countries, Daily Trust Saturday reports.
President Muhammadu Buhari had on February 4, 2021, appointed the retired service chiefs as non-career ambassadors.
The nominees are General Abayomi Olonisakin (Rtd) – Ekiti; Lt Gen Tukur Buratai (Rtd) – Borno; Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas (Rtd) – Cross River; Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (Rtd) – Bauchi; and Air Vice Marshal Muhammad S. Usman (Rtd) – Kano.
Gen Olonisakin had served as Chief of Defense Staff (CDS); Buratai as Chief of Army Staff (COAS); Ibas as Chief of Naval Staff (CNS); Abubakar as Chief of Air Staff (CAS) and Usman as Chief of Defense Intelligence (CDI). ....

Confirmation of ex-service chiefs and top military officers did not sail smoothly on the floor of the Senate, Tuesday, as the Minority leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe drew the attention of the Senate on the implication of such confirmation on its integrity, if a petition against the nominees was ignored.
The Senate had received the report at plenary and moved to meet in the committee of the whole to consider the reports for confirmation of the five nominees are General Abayomi G. Senate confirms Buratai, other ex-service chiefs as ambassadors


The Senate, on Tuesday, confirmed the appointment of former service chiefs as non-career ambassadors-designate.
Their confirmation followed the consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Senator Mohammed Bulkachuwa.
President, Ahmad Lawan, had on February 10, directed the Committee on Foreign Affairs to confirm General Abayomi Olonisakin (retd.) (Ekiti); Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.) (Borno); Vice Admiral Ibok- Ette Ibas (retd.) (Cross River; Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar(retd.) (Bauchi); and Air Vice Marshal Muhammad S. Usman (retd.) (Kano) as non-career ambassadors of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
An attempt by the Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, to draw the attention of his colleagues to a petition against their confirmation was stopped by the President of Senate, Ahmad Lawan.‌ ....

Senate confirms ex-Service Chiefs as non-career ambassadors


Their confirmation followed consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, chaired by Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa (APC, Bauchi).
An attempt by the Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, to draw the attention of his colleagues to a petition against their confirmation was stopped by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.
Abaribe had asked Bulkachuwa to explain why the petition against them was dismissed but Lawan said the petition lacked merit.
 
The appointments
President Muhammadu Buhari had, on February 4, 2021, appointed the retired service chiefs as a non-career ambassador.
