In the past two weeks two global superpowers have had to face an unsettling reality - census results in the US and in China indicate that both countries are likely to start shrinking in population much sooner than they thought.
That s because fertility rates are falling fast. As that happens, the population gets older, which can stand in the way of economic growth. It s something governments are usually keen to avoid.
China and the US are not at that point yet. But they could learn from other countries that are already thinking about how to boost fertility. ....

Most grandparents are happy to say that grandchildren enrich their lives and perhaps even help them feel younger, but could it actually have an impact on your health and how long you live? 
That was what Professor Dr Lea Ellwardt and her team at the University of Cologne in Germany set out to discover with a new study which has just been unveiled.  ....

Professor Miia Kivipelto has won the 2020 Ryman Prize.
The award recognises Professor Kivipelto’s more than 20 years of research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia.
Professor Kivipelto was awarded the prize by the Right Honourable Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand, at a special ceremony in Auckland, New Zealand today.
The Ryman Prize is an annual $250,000 international award for the best work carried out anywhere in the world that has enhanced quality of life for older people. It is the richest prize of its kind in the world. ....
