YAOUNDE, CAMEROON - Authorities in Cameroon said at least 70,000 schoolchildren and their teachers have returned to classrooms this year in the troubled western regions. The schools had been abandoned due to threats from English-speaking rebels, who see them as an arm of the French-speaking-majority s rule.
Fourteen-year-old Clementine Fua is spending a holiday in Yaounde with her uncle. Fua said this year, she braved threats from separatists and successfully went to school in her hometown Njinikom, in the English-speaking Northwest region. Fua said separatists deprived her of education for three years. ....

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and a pro-independence movement in western Cameroon, ‘Ambazonia Governing Council’ (AGovC), have agreed to exchange weapons and personnel to help them achieve their common goals “Freedom”.
Created in 2012 by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB had over the years condemned the Nigerian government for its poor investment, inequitable resource distribution, marginalization, and heavy military presence in the region.
The group therefore demanded for the restoration of an independent state of Biafra in the South East through an independence referendum.
On its part, AGovC, fights to carve out Cameroon’s English-speaking Northwest and Southwest regions into a breakaway state called Ambazonia. Grievances of Anglophone Cameroonians date back to 1961, when the region was granted independence from Britain. ....

In Cameroon and Nigeria, separatist movements agitating for sovereign states of their own are said to be building a coalition to fight for their independence.
Pro-independence movement in western Cameroon has been gathering steam in the past five years.
Sources say it is joining forces with Biafra agitators in Nigeria to mobilise supporters through social media, and clashing with government security forces.
Separatist leaders from the ‘rebel’ groups, recently announced a formal alliance, which will ignite violence and instability in the two countries and across the West and Central African regions where violent extremist organisations affiliated with the Islamic State and al Qaeda are establishing a strong foothold. ....
