RPT-COLUMN-IEA call to end fossil fuels likely to fall on deaf ears in Asia: Russell

GRAPHIC - IEA s pathway to net zero emissions: tmsnrt.rs/3fpTPlJ
LAUNCESTON, Australia, May 20 (Reuters) - It is probably just ironic coincidence, but the same day the International Energy Agency (IEA) called on the world to end fossil fuel investments, the Australian government announced plans for a new, $460 million natural gas-fired power plant.
The stark contrast between the two announcements is, however, emblematic of the challenges the world faces in transitioning from fossil fuel energy to cleaner renewables as efforts to combat climate change become more urgent and widespread across the globe.
The IEA’s report on the pathway to net zero carbon emissions by 2050, released on May 18, warned that investment in oil, natural gas and coal projects must come to an end if the target has any chance of being reached. ....

GRAPHIC - Spot Asian LNG price by year: tmsnrt.rs/3gZIF9u
LAUNCESTON, Australia, May 4 (Reuters) - The price of spot liquefied natural gas (LNG) for delivery to north Asia has started its traditional summer rally early this year as buyers fret about the potential for supply shortages when the peak demand season arrives.
The spot price LNG-AS rose to $8.85 per million British thermal units (mmBtu) in the week to April 30, up from $8.65 the prior week and the highest since Jan. 22. ....

GRAPHIC - Seaborne coal imports for Asia, China and India: tmsnrt.rs/3e1YNpE
LAUNCESTON, Australia, March 4 (Reuters) - There are signs that the price and demand surge for coal during the recent colder-than-expected winter across North Asia is starting to ease, even as the outlook for the seaborne market for the fuel remains solid.
Asia’s total imports of seaborne coal, both thermal for power plants and coking for steel-making, were estimated by Refinitiv at 65.59 million tonnes in February, down from January’s 80.71 million tonnes. ....
