WASHINGTON In a new study, researchers demonstrate an automated, easy-to-operate quantum key distribution (QKD) system using the fiber network in the city of Padua, Italy. The field test represents an important step toward implementing this highly secure quantum communication technology using the type of communication networks already in place in many regions around the world.
QKD offers impenetrable encryption for data communication because it uses the quantum properties of light to generate secure random keys for encrypting and decrypting data. ....

WASHINGTON In a new study, researchers have shown that 3D printing can be used to make highly precise and complex miniature lenses with sizes of just a few microns. The microlenses can be used to correct color distortion during imaging, enabling small and lightweight cameras that can be designed for a variety of applications.
The ability to 3D print complex micro-optics means that they can be fabricated directly onto many different surfaces such as the CCD or CMOS chips used in digital cameras, said Michael Schmid, a member of the research team from University of Stuttgart in Germany. The micro-optics can also be printed on the end of optical fibers to create very small medical endoscop ....

WASHINGTON Researchers have taken an important new step in advancing the performance of resonator fiber optic gyroscopes, a type of fiber optic sensor that senses rotation using only light. Because gyroscopes are the basis of most navigation systems, the new work could one day bring important improvements to these systems.
High-performance gyroscopes are used for navigation in many types of air, ground, marine and space applications, said Glen A. Sanders, who led the research team from Honeywell International. Although our gyroscope is still in the early stages of development, if it reaches its full performance capabilities it will be poise ....
