Lawsuit Targets Massive Restaurant Group's Practice of Paying Servers Less Than Minimum Wage – Courthouse News Service

OAKLAND, Calif. (CN) The advocacy group One Fair Wage is taking on the largest restaurant chain in America with a federal lawsuit challenging its policy of paying tipped workers less than minimum wage, claiming it leads directly to higher rates of sexual harassment and pay inequity for servers of color.
Its lawsuit filed Thursday claims Darden Restaurant Group, which operates national chains like the Olive Garden and Longhorn Steakhouse, maintains a wage policy that forces workers to rely on tips to make up the bulk of their wages.
This in turn puts servers at the mercy of potentially biased, racist or sexist customers who may be biased. ....

Crucially, this meant she didn’t lose those supplies, and while the restaurant did have a few water lines break, she was able to start cooking on Wednesday, February 17. “We were going to just do free food for anyone who wanted a hot meal,” she says. “We ended up rolling out some chicken and dumplings; we did some beef and vegetable soup. Anybody who needed just came and got some.”  ....

Restaurants to the Rescue, Even When They Need Rescuing

Pieous,
T Loc’s Sonoran Hot Dog, ah, can we ever properly chart all the generous outpourings of aid?
Note: Most places have announced reopening to the public – but check their social media for updates and specific offerings.
And our local farmers – working their asses off to try to save what could be saved from the onslaught of Winter Storm Uri, the state’s big sky itself suddenly against them, bringing what they could to Texas Farmers Markets. The first weekend out, many farmers and vendors reported selling out due to high turnout, but their troubles will intensify as many have lost almost all their crops except for greenhouse seedlings. ....
