Ottawa County, Firelands Forward team up to boost labor market

The Beacon
Ottawa County has joined Firelands Forward of North Central Ohio, becoming the third county to align with the workforce development initiative dedicated to driving regional community growth and prosperity.
Developed by a group of private and public leaders in 2019, the three-year strategic plan of Firelands Forward is focused on improving job skills, fulfillment, and retention of labor in the Erie, Huron — and now Ottawa — counties, becoming one of the most strategic workforce initiatives in North Central Ohio.
The Firelands initiative is unique in that it not only has an entire staff dedicated to driving workforce growth. It also has access to funding that’s used directly to pilot innovative programs, positioning their workforce and talent acquisition goals for each county to be extraordinarily successful.

Tell Tales 4-29-21
We were sad to learn of the passing of Dave Glasser, a local businessman, friend and former owner of Catawba Interiors. Dave and I used to team up for a major annual golf match with Dick Thompson and my brother, Chuck. It was always a good time. Our condolences to his wife, Mary Ann, and his family.

Oak Harbor riverfront development receives $500,000 in state funding

The Beacon
An overhead rendering of the Village of Oak Harbor shoreline along the Portage River by the Oak Harbor Development Group.
Oak Harbor’s dream of creating a walkable riverfront, an idea that dates back more than two decades, just became infinitely more feasible with the passing of the 2021-2022 Ohio Capital Budget, which included a generous $500,000 line item for Oak Harbor’s waterfront improvements.
The biannual capital budget, which funds permanent improvements throughout the state, recognizes community projects with high impact and strong public support.
The funding is the direct result of the coordinated efforts and determination of the Oak Harbor Development Group (OHDG) and the Village of Oak Harbor to incorporate a proposed river walk along the Portage River.
