Nicholls biology professor appointed to Louisiana state task force

Gov. John Bel Edwards has appointed a Nicholls State University biology professor to a new task force created to address critical issues in the Atchafalaya Basin. 
Chris Bonvillain, associate professor of biological sciences, will join the 21-member Task Force on Atchafalaya River Basin Restoration and Enhancement. 
“I hope to use my 17-plus years of research knowledge in the Atchafalaya Basin to provide scientific leadership, advice and assessment on projects that will conserve, sustain and enhance the Atchafalaya Basin,” Bonvillain said. 
Edwards created the advisory board in December with the hopes it could address critical issues facing the basin through collaboration with the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority and other coastal-based organizations.  ....

Four residents of Acadiana were appointed this week to the Governor’s Advisory Task Force on Atchafalaya River Basin Restoration and Enhancement.
Jody P. Meche of Henderson, Robert C. “Rudy” Sparks Jr. of Patterson, Christopher J. Tauzin of Breaux Bridge and Raymond M. “Mac” Wade of Morgan City will each have a spot on the advisory task force representing different aspects of the Atchafalaya Basin s residents and businesses.
According to the Governor s Office, the Task Force will elevate critical issues facing the Atchafalaya River Basin and the importance of its holistic management for navigation, flood control, and restoration. It will identify and build support for new and recurring sources of funding to reinvigorate the Basin Floodway System – Louisiana Project as well as identify shared go ....

Gov. John Bel Edwards today signed an executive order creating the Atchafalaya River Basin Restoration and Enhancement (ARBRE) Task Force to address long-standing issues in the basin and raise public awareness of the critical nature of these concerns.
“The irony of the Atchafalaya Basin is that while it is suffering from an abundance of sediment, the rest of our coast is experiencing a severe sediment deficit,” Edwards said. “The basin’s stressors are not only harming water quality and the environment but also threatening the capacity of the basin to carry flood waters from the Mississippi and Red Rivers safely and effectively. The basin is the nation’s largest river-basin swamp with a rich ecology, and it is past time that it receive more focused attention here in Louisiana and nationally.” ....
