Collier leaders set to act on mental health expansion with David Lawrence Center


The Collier County Commission is preparing to vote on two key elements of a plan to build a $25-million center to address growing demand for mental health and addiction treatment in the region.
Commissioners will be asked at their May 25 meeting to sign off on five acres that will be donated to the county from the David Lawrence Center, the dominant provider of mental health services in the community, according to Scott Burgess, chief executive officer of the nonprofit organization.
The new complex will be built using local sales tax proceeds on the five-acre parcel that is immediately east of the David Lawrence campus off Golden Gate Parkway near Interstate 75.  ....

Coastal News Today | FL - Army Corps' $2 billion storm protection plan to shore up parts of Collier's coast draws concerns


The Board of Collier Commissioners unanimously agreed to sign two non-binding letters of support for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer’s proposed $2.1 billion plan to provide coastal resiliency for parts of the county, though commissioners showed reluctance for the plan as it’s written.
Summing up the board’s concerns, Commissioner Andy Solis said signing the non-binding letters today would not prevent the county from opting out later.
“None of this is going to be set in stone,” Solis said. “It’s not a perfect plan but it’s $2 billion worth of funding, and we can’t throw the baby out with bathwater.” ....
