Out Of Gas, Full Of News: The Week In Review From WFAE

WFAE
There was gasoline at this ExxonMobil station in south Charlotte but also a long line of cars waiting for it.
If you ve been slacking on social etiquette over a year of social distancing, now’s a good time to brush up. In the biggest step back toward “normal” since the coronavirus pandemic began, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this week that fully vaccinated Americans can ditch their face masks in most situations.
It didn’t take long for North Carolina to embrace the new guidelines. On Friday, Gov. Roy Cooper lifted the state’s indoor mask mandate for most situations and fully eased capacity limits on businesses. The move came as more than half of North Carolina’s residents have gotten at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and after 14 months of a pandemic that’s claimed more than 12,800 lives in the state. ....

Commissioner: Mecklenburg Made CMS A 'Scapegoat'; County Manager Defends Funding Plan

/
Mecklenburg Commissioner Susan Rodriguez-McDowell said County Manager Dena Diorio s plan to withhold $56 million from CMS made the school system a scapegoat.
Mecklenburg County Manager Dena Diorio and Commissioner Susan Rodriguez-McDowell clashed Tuesday night over Diorio’s proposal to withhold $56 million from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools over long-standing achievement gaps between white and minority students.
At Tuesday’s meeting, Rodriguez-McDowell criticized that proposal, which must be approved by county commissioners as part of the upcoming budget.
“We are not acting as true partners to solve a problem,” Rodriguez-McDowell said. “Instead, we have created a scapegoat. This plan is punitive in nature. No Child Left Behind was a failure, and this idea of tying of funding to outcomes is unbelievably short-sighted when we have a system that is woefully underfunded by our state.” ....

Mecklenburg Co. Commission Unanimously Passes Resolution Supporting LGBTQ Protections

WCCB Charlotte s CW
February 2, 2021
Commissioners unanimously passed a resolution in support of new non-discrimination ordinances.
“We must learn about each other’s stories, we must listen to how people came to be who they are. This is a soul issue. We must stop dehumanizing others,” said Commissioner Susan Rodriguez-McDowell, during Tuesday night’s meeting.
It’s mostly a symbolic move, since commissioners aren’t sure if they can legally pass an ordinance themselves.
“We human beings struggle with empathy. We struggle to put aside our story and see the burdens of another person,” said Commissioner Leigh Altman.
The renewed push for new non-discrimination ordinances comes after the end of a nearly four year ban on them. ....
