Some CMS Board Members Will Likely Have A Year Added To Terms. Why?

The Charlotte City Council and mayor are likely to get four or five months added to their two-year terms because of U.S. Census Bureau delays in reporting data. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board? Some will likely get an extra year to their four-year terms. Why the disparity?

What Data On Race Gaps And Low-Performing Schools Say About Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools

Mecklenburg County commissioners have cited low-performing schools and persistent racial gaps on test scores when they voted to withhold $56 million from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. They say they want to force CMS to produce a better school improvement plan. CMS leaders, meanwhile, have accused the county of mangling facts andtrying to take an oversight role that legally falls to the school board.

Commissioner: Mecklenburg Made CMS A 'Scapegoat'; County Manager Defends Funding Plan

/
Mecklenburg Commissioner Susan Rodriguez-McDowell said County Manager Dena Diorio's plan to withhold $56 million from CMS made the school system a "scapegoat."
Mecklenburg County Manager Dena Diorio and Commissioner Susan Rodriguez-McDowell clashed Tuesday night over Diorio’s proposal to withhold $56 million from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools over long-standing achievement gaps between white and minority students.
At Tuesday’s meeting, Rodriguez-McDowell criticized that proposal, which must be approved by county commissioners as part of the upcoming budget.
“We are not acting as true partners to solve a problem,” Rodriguez-McDowell said. “Instead, we have created a scapegoat. This plan is punitive in nature. No Child Left Behind was a failure, and this idea of tying of funding to outcomes is unbelievably short-sighted when we have a system that is woefully underfunded by our state.”

CMS Begins Thorny Task Of Regulating Social Media Use By Schools And Employees

A new CMS policy would regulate official social media accounts, such as the Providence High Instagram page.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is tackling the task of regulating social media use by schools and employees, and it's raising difficult questions about the balance between free speech and professional standards.
Writing a policy means spelling out who can say what on social media for a district with more than 19,000 employees — and doing it in a polarized climate where people go into digital battle over memes, opinions and news sources. The CMS legal and policy staff have been researching and drafting a social media policy for some time now. This week, they finally had something ready to show the school board’s policy committee.

Census Delays Could Delay Charlotte City Council, CMS Fall Elections

WFAE
The city of Charlotte and CMS need census data to draw new districts to comply with the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling of "One Person, One Vote." With the release of that delayed, both are scrambling to determine how they can draw new maps in time for their fall elections.
The release of highly detailed, precinct-by-precinct population counts from the 2020 census has been delayed by several months, which could impact the elections for the Charlotte City Council and Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board.
The Census Bureau announced Wednesday that the data – known as PL 94-171 files — may not be released until the end of July, as opposed to winter or early spring as planned.
