Feb. 17—TRAVERSE CITY — Zoning changes are coming to three blocks of Eighth Street to streamline the number of districts, as well as reign in rules to soften impacts on residential neighbors. Bishop Animal Shelter plans to donate its facilities to Manatee County | East County

It was just a few weeks ago Manatee County commissioners were debating whether to spend $10 million on a new shelter for the county s Animal Services Department.
They didn’t know a 38-acre plot twist was just around the corner.
Though nothing is official, the Mary E. Parker Foundation wants to donate the Bishop Animal Shelter to Manatee County, according to administrative trustee Bob Blalock. The foundation owns the shelter, which was founded by Parker’s adopted parents, Lillian and Edward Bishop.
The foundation is planning to donate roughly half of the 38-acre property to the county for the purpose of sheltering animals. It’s unclear what will happen to the other half of the property, an area that includes walking trails, but Blalock said any potential use must be animal-related. ....

The four commissioners appointed to lead Tauranga City Council last week were welcomed to their roles in a pōwhiri yesterday.
The commission - chairwoman Anne Tolley and fellow commissioners Bill Wasley, Stephen Selwood and Shadrach Rolleston - took up their roles on Tuesday having been appointed by Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta.
Tolley said the commissioners gathered for the first time as a group on Thursday morning.
We were then welcomed to our new roles by tangata whenua at a pōwhiri hosted by Hairini Marae. ....

The byelections for three positions on Tauranga City Council have officially been cancelled following last week s appointment of commissioners to replace the council s elected members.
Former mayor Tenby Powell, Jako Abrie and Heidi Hughes resigned from their positions on the council last year, triggering the byelections.
Electoral Officer Warwick Lampp said the publication of an official gazette notice confirming the appointment of the commission effectively cancelled the planned by-election process for Tauranga City Council Mayor, At Large Councillor and Otumoetai-Pyes Pa Councillor. ....
