The consort’s throne was missing from the State Opening of Parliament in the wake of the death of the Duke of Edinburgh and amid the pandemic.
In the House of Lords, a single ornate Sovereign’s Throne stood under the gold canopy for the Queen during Tuesday’s ceremony.

Where two thrones had previously stood, today just one, as the Queen took her seat for the State Opening of Parliament, her first major ceremonial duty since the Duke of Edinburgh s death. 
Her Majesty, 95, the only person present who did not wear a mask throughout, cut a lone figure as she quietly delivered her 67th Queen’s Speech with no one by her side. ....

It was a vastly different State Opening of Parliament in many ways – even for a monarch attending for the 67th time.
A smattering of masked MPs and peers, an empty looking chamber and greatly reduced pomp and ceremony was the order of the day for the Covid-safe Queen’s Speech in 2021.
Yet for the Queen, it also marked her first major public ceremonial duty as head of state since the death of her beloved husband the Duke of Edinburgh.

Appearing solemn and quiet in voice, the widowed sovereign – the only figure without a mask throughout – did what she has always pledged to do, discharging her royal duty without flurry or fuss, speaking for just eight minutes and 52 seconds. ....

The Government will set out its legislative agenda for the year ahead in the Queen s Speech this morning.
The ceremony - which is the traditional State Opening of Parliament - is due to take place at the Houses of Parliament from 11am to 12.30pm.
It will be her first major public ceremonial duty since the death of her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh.
