Officials grapple with locals being priced out of Aspen

Aspen’s elected officials last week decided to not make the preservation of locally serving businesses a critical goal due to the complexity of the issue, but they lamented that the town has changed significantly and local residents are being priced out.
“What I mean are places for locals to still enjoy this community, and we’ve seen such a deterioration of it,” Mayor Torre said during last week’s council goal-setting retreat. “Currently, we have several locally priced affordable restaurants that are not in operation because of redevelopment, and it’s impacting us community wide.”
Recognizing that controlling the market is nearly impossible, council members agreed to continue working on the issue with willing partners, like the chamber of commerce and the business community. ....

It appears that the effects of the pandemic have only made Aspen’s commercial real estate scene even more desirable than it has been in recent years.
Downtown Aspen has one retail space available for summer occupancy, according to Angi Wang, a broker at Setterfield & Bright.
She and fellow broker Karen Setterfield said they haven’t seen this kind of demand ever.
“It’s stronger than it’s ever been, and I’ve been doing this for 30 years,” Setterfield said. “Everyone wants Aspen. … We are out of spaces, and we have unlimited demand for retail spaces.” ....

USO: OPEC Likely to Keep Tapering Production Cuts

The US Oil Fund (USO) and the US Brent Oil Fund (BNO) track WTI and Brent crude oil prices, the two world pricing benchmarks. OPEC+’s pricing power is back on the rise, with the US addressing climate change by increasing regulations on extracting hydrocarbons from the earth’s crust. The oil ministers will meet before the summer to decide on the level of production cuts. While they will likely taper production cuts, the cartel’s mission is to achieve the highest possible petroleum price for its members. After years of low prices because of US output, OPEC+ can now make US consumers pay top dollar for oil and oil products over the coming years. ....

TAN: Here's How to Take Advantage of the Dip in Solar Stocks

In late 2020, energy-related stocks took over leadership roles as sector rotation took traditional oil and gas companies’ shares higher after lagging the overall market since 2018. Meanwhile, alternative energy companies reached peaks in 2008 when crude oil’s price moved to its all-time high at $147.27 per barrel. After reaching lows in March 2020, the alternative energy sector has been rallying. The change in US administrations after the November 2020 election pushed alternative energy company stocks to the highest levels since 2008. The Invesco Solar ETF product (TAN) holds shares in companies that harness the sun’s energy to power the world.
