Even during an ongoing coronavirus pandemic, there was no stopping a Sicklerville teenager’s compassion, heart and drive to honor the memory of his younger brother, Emanuel.
For the last eight years, DJ Alexis, 18, has honored Emanuel, who died shortly after birth at Jefferson Washington Township Hospital in Turnersville in 2006.
From his brother’s death came “Emanuel’s Annual Toy Drive,” which has donated thousands of gifts to the hospital for its young patients and provided a bit of comfort and hope during the holiday season. ....

Ruben Johnson-Santiago knows what living in poverty feels like.
It’s the reason he can empathize with the hundreds of people he sees monthly, families struggling through the pandemic because of lost jobs and dealing with shrinking resources.
He’s become a fixture in the New London area over the past several months, organizing food distribution events, backpack and school supply giveaways, winter coat collections, a barbeque, toy drive and just about anything else he thinks can make a difference.
He said he was recently laid off because of the pandemic and the outreach initiatives have become his full-time vocation. ....

Organizers with the local nonprofit “Cuddles for Kids” held their 15th Annual Toy Drive over the weekend.
The drive was supposed to be at the First Summit Arena, but due to recent pandemic concerns, it was moved to the Upper Yoder Fire Hall.
People could drive by and drop off their toys, which will be given to children in need.
Their organization is based off of donating stuffed animals, but this season, they’re pushing for monetary donations instead.
“We’re really trying to be careful with the amount of things and certain items that are being donated, so if we can stick to monetary donations where we can buy straight from a distributor, or straight from a store, and we’re able to give someone, or a family, or a child a new item, we’re really pushing towards doing that,” said Conner Hagins, Founder of Cuddles for Kids. ....
