In Focus: Retelling the History of Indigenous People

The power of literature to address the history of the oppression of Indigenous peoples in North America and chart their futures has never been more important. As the U.S. experiences a wave of popular concern about social justice issues, publishers are really just beginning to embrace a growing number of works on such topics as ancestral domains and land rights of Indigenous communities; preservation of their languages, traditions, rituals, and cultural knowledge; and, just as important, the reimagining of their lives through the storytelling of contemporary Indigenous authors.
PW contacted a variety of publishers to find out how their programs serve the needs of Indigenous readers and their communities. We spoke with ....

Lohmann: A centenarian, a martini and a donated kidney bring a couple of Richmond stories together


Three years ago, I visited Charlie Carr soon after he turned 100. I learned he was “raised on beans and cornbread” in the Kentucky bluegrass, served in the Navy during World War II, and worked in military intelligence.
At the time, Carr, a widower, still drove his 1994 Chevrolet Caprice Classic (he has since sold it), enrolled in exercise classes and cooked his own meals.
He also shared his secret to longevity: “Keep moving, and drink at least three martinis a night.”
His favorite spot to enjoy a martini? At the end of the bar at Lemaire at The Jefferson Hotel. The place became his “Cheers,” where everybody knows his name and, eventually, his age. He’s now 103½. ....

The death occurred, at Mullingar General Hospital, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, December 19 of John Connell, Fardromin, Ballinamuck, Longford. He is reunited with his beloved wife Maureen. John will be forever missed by his loving family, sons Eamon, Gerard, Dessie, Seamus, Noel and Nigel, daughters Sheila (Corrigan), Deidre (Harte), Ann (Regan) and Marie, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, his 22 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, sister Bridie Cloonan (England), brother-in-law Desmond Bohan, sister-in-law Bridie Connell, nephews, nieces, neighbours and his many good friends.
We have lost, but heaven has gained, One of the best this world contained. Rest in peace John. ....
