Although Mississippi is known as the “Birthplace of America’s Music,” its contributions are generally tied to blues, jazz, rock, country and gospel. However, there are five Mississippi musicians breaking the mold and excelling in the classical music genre.
Robert Fisher, after a successful career in classical music, returned to Mississippi where he now teaches string music at Jackson State University. As part of his teaching, Fisher decided to introduce his students to musicians who had their start in Mississippi and branched out throughout the country and beyond. He did so via ZOOM, April 16. ....

At first, Boston Symphony Orchestra violinist Lucia Lin didn’t intend to make a statement about diversity or inclusion when she struck upon the idea for her “In Tandem” duet series. Rather, Lin was simply looking for ways to stay active and engaged as an artist. Like many musicians, Lin saw her work dry up completely at the start of the pandemic. ....

La Musica cancels 2021 festival, student playwrights honored

For the second year in a row, the La Musica International Chamber Music Festival has been canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Leaders of the organization said they faced numerous challenges with international travel for some of the musicians and were concerned about the safety of the musicians and patrons for in-person concert gatherings.
The 2020 festival was canceled just weeks before it was scheduled to open in April.
Those who hold ticket credits with La Musica can apply the money toward the 2022 season, request a refund or donate the money to the organization. For more information: 941-366-8450, ext. 7 or lamusicafestival.org. ....

BSO NOW platform ready to launch archival programs


The BSO Now concert streaming platform — bso.org/now — launches the first of four archival programs Thursday at noon, 
All four programs — featuring artists who enjoyed especially close relationships with the orchestra — were originally produced and distributed by Boston public broadcaster WGBH for the Evening at Symphony television series. Longtime WCRB announcer Brian McCreath will serve as host for these archival BSO NOW streams.
Thursday s opening program — originally recorded on April 26, 1975 — features Seiji Ozawa, who was just two years into his tenure as BSO music director (1973–2002), leading the BSO and New England Conservatory Chorus in Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, Resurrection, with soprano soloist Susan Davenny Wyner and contralto soloist Maureen Forrester. ....

Dancing into a new year
The Sarasota Ballet kicks off the new year with its third digital program of excerpts from a wide variety of pieces by six different choreographers. The company announced in December that it would continue its online presentations through the rest of the season. The latest offering, available Friday through Tuesday features Peter Darrell’s “Othello,” Christopher Wheeldon’s “The American,” Sir Matthew Bourne’s “The Infernal Galop,” Sir Peter Wright’s “The Mirror Walkers” and “Summertide,” Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s “Concerto” and Dominic Walsh’s “Clair de Lune.” Admission is $35 and the program may be viewed as many times as you like through Jan. 5.
