Depression takes toll on Nigerians amid COVID-19
One in three COVID-patients have neurological or psychiatric conditions
The Lancet Psychiatry, found that Caroline is not alone. Far from it, actually: Researchers went through electronic health records of more than 236,000 COVID-19 patients mostly from the US and found that one in three, or 34 percent, had been diagnosed with a psychiatric or neurological condition within six months of being infected with coronavirus.
Neurological conditions like stroke and dementia were rare, but 17 percent of COVID-patients were diagnosed with anxiety disorders and 14 percent with mood disorders like depression. The Oxford researchers also looked at two control groups of patients with influenza and patients with any respiratory tract infection (except for COVID) to make sure their numbers didn t just reflect the experience of the general public living through a pandemic. ....

Brazil's Covid 'Fukushima' and P1 variant killing young people threatens to destabilise the world

Brazil is facing a biological Fukushima and is seeing lethal new Covid variants every week that could threaten to destabilise the world, one of the country s leading health experts has warned.
The country s P1 variant - believed to be 150 times more contagious than the original Covid-19 virus - is of the most concern. It can reinfect those who had the first strain, and has killed thousands of people in their 30s, 40s and 50s.
The variant has infected hundreds in Canada, including players in professional ice hockey team the Vancouver Canucks, and has been recorded in 27 people in the UK. Its lethality and speed of transmission has prompted a top doctor to warn Australia against complacency.    ....

Living in the age of COVID-19
Just over a year ago, a mysterious new coronavirus began spreading around the world. Today, the pandemic has infected more than 100 million people and turned our lives upside down.
Collective physical distancing
Singapore has recorded very low coronavirus infection rates since October. Observers have credited the Southeast Asian city-state for keeping the virus in check by closely monitoring its citizens, in part with a mandatory tracing app. The decline in infections means locals can visit open-air cinemas provided physical distancing is observed.
Anxiety rife in South Africa
South Africa is the African country worst hit by the coronavirus pandemic. This patient in a hospital near Cape Town is one of 1.4 million citizens who have been infected with COVID-19. A novel coronavirus variant, known as B.1.351 or 501Y.V2, has only increased anxiety. Just like the new British virus variant, this South African mutation is thought to be ....

Surging in remote and poor areas, Brazil s COVID-19 death toll is 2nd highest in the world

It was late at night and a chaotic crowd had gathered in front of a hospital in Manaus, the biggest city in Brazil s vast Amazon and the last hope for medical care for tens of thousands of COVID-19 patients in the region.
Doctors shouted patients names, working their way down an impossibly long list while the sick and their families jostled through the jammed emergency entrance.
Where is the help? yelled Priscila Carvalho, whose mother lay on a respirator inside, in Portuguese to a cluster of TV cameras. ....
