Santa Clarita Residents Invited To Virtual Town Hall Discussion Of LASD
Santa Clarita Valley residents are invited to attend a scheduled virtual town hall meeting next month to discuss the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) and topics related to the department.
A virtual town hall meeting regarding the LASD’s performance, held by the L.A. County Civilian Oversight Commission, is slated for Tuesday, June 8, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m and residents are invited to discuss hot button issues like policing during protests, response times and rising crime levels.
“Following speaker remarks, local leaders would like to hear about your experience with deputies & how you feel about public safety in your community,” officials with the L.A. County Civilian Oversight Commission stated. “Bring your observations, thoughts & suggestions. Join us at the upcoming town hall.” ....

L.A. homicides rose in 2020: A look at the deadliest week

On a night in late June, Carla Walton lighted a candle where a childhood friend had been gunned down the previous day.
Walton didn’t intend to stay long at the sidewalk vigil in Long Beach. She had to be up the next morning to bury another friend a young mother who’d been shot dead while waiting at a red light in Compton.
Her sadness over the bloodshed had boiled over into anger. Walton called her daughter earlier in the day “just ranting ranting about gun violence,” her daughter recalled. “She was just going off.”
The violence circling Walton’s life wasn’t finished. A man heckled the mourners at the vigil, provoking a confrontation. He and four people in the crowd pulled out guns and opened fire. Two bullets hit Walton. She died in a hospital later that night. ....
