DNA testing speeds pneumonia diagnoses in COVID-19 patients

Developed at Addenbrooke s Hospital in Cambridge, U.K., with Public Health England, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test screens for 52 different pathogens that may cause respiratory illness in intensive care patients.
Pneumonia in particular is a risk for patients who need mechanical ventilation, such as those with severe COVID-19. In the
Critical Care study, which was conducted at Addenbrooke s, researchers found that ventilated COVID-19 patients were twice as likely to have pneumonia than ventilated patients who did not have coronavirus, a statistically significant result.
In contrast to the time-consuming process of taking cultures and growing bacteria in a lab, the DNA test turnaround time is about four hours, allowing for a faster diagnosis and administration of antibiotics where needed, noted co-author Dr. Andrew Conway Morris, an intensive care specialist at the University of Cambridge. In addition to testing for pathogens, the test can show if there is ....

DNA test can help identify pneumonia in severe COVID-19 patients: Study

DNA test can help identify pneumonia in severe COVID-19 patients: Study

London: Cambridge scientists have developed a simple DNA test that can quickly identify secondary infections in COVID-19 patients, who have double the risk of developing pneumonia while on ventilation.
Mechanical ventilation is often the only way to keep patients with the most severe forms of COVID-19 alive, as doctors use anti-inflammatory therapies to treat their inflamed lungs, the researchers said.
However, these patients are susceptible to further infections from bacteria and fungi that they may acquire while in hospital –- so called ‘ventilator-associated pneumonia’.
Now, researchers at the University of Cambridge and Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have developed a DNA test to quickly identify these infections and target antibiotic treatment as needed. ....

Early on in the pandemic, we noticed that Covid-19 patients appeared to be particularly at risk of developing secondary pneumonia, and started using a rapid diagnostic test that we had developed for just such a situation, said co-author Andrew Conway Morris from the University of Cambridge. ....
