In other words, perhaps, the coronavirus virus uses long-term infections as a mutational testing ground. While inside one person, they can try out all these different combinations of mutations and figure out, through trial and error, which ones are best at evading the immune system or helping the virus become more infectious.
Nothing new and textbook virus evolution. However, the leap to the last sentence is not and is not the most likely outcome, rather the opposite, in my opinion, and very poorly worded.
And this process is likely happening again right now, worldwide, in other immunocompromised patients. Eventually, these new variants could mutate again and create even more dangerous forms of the virus. ....

What Australia can learn from New Zealand about signing a treaty with its Indigenous peoples

New Zealand will this week mark its national day, commemorating the 181st anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi.
Dominic O Sullivan from Charles Sturt University says the document explains why contemporary relationships between Indigenous peoples and the state look very different in New Zealand and Australia.
On the 6th of February, 1840, representatives of the British crown and 540 Māori rangatira signed the treaty, in a bid to align the Māori people and the new British colonists.
The agreement is seen by many as New Zealand s founding document.
The Treaty of Waitangi, or Tiriti o Waitangi, was signed in 1840 by representatives of the British Crown and Maori chiefs from the North Island of New Zealand. ....

Although the incidence of polio acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) has decreased in India, the nonpolio AFP (NPAFP) rate has increased. Nationwide, the NPAFP rate is 11.82 per 100 000 population, whereas the expected rate is 1 to 2 per 100 000 population.
Andre 5.1.1
A few questions:
Assuming for the sake of argument that the apparent increase in non-polio acute flaccid paralysis is in fact due to the version of polio vaccine being used in India being the cheaper of vaccines available (this assumption is by no means a clear conclusion from the available evidence), do you think this outcome is worse than the outcome would have been from not vaccinating and letting polio run rampant? ....

Sharing the Sovereign: Indigenous Peoples, Recognition, Treaties and the State | Dominic O'Sullivan

This book explains how recognition theory contributes to non-colonial and enduring political relationships between Indigenous nations and the state. It refers to Indigenous Australian arguments for a Voice to Parliament and treaties to show what recognition may mean for practical politics and policy-making. It considers critiques of recognition theory by Canadian First Nations’ scholars who make strong arguments for its assimilationist effect, but shows that ultimately, recognition is a theory and practice of transformative potential, requiring fundamentally different ways of thinking about citizenship and sovereignty.
This book draws extensively on New Zealand’s Treaty of Waitangi and measures to support Maori political participation, to show what treaties and a Voice to Parliament could mean in practical terms. It responds to liberal democratic objections to show how institutionalised means of indigenous participation may, in fact, make democracy work better. ....
