United Way of Onslow County presented checks on Thursday morning to local nonprofit programs as part of community investment. This year marks the 66th year United Way of Onslow has supported local nonprofits through the Annual Giving Campaign, with this year pledging $165K to 13 local nonprofits supporting 19 programs in Onslow. “We continue to invest in community partners who are addressing immediate relief for Onslow County, including access to food, shelter, healthcare, and emergency financial assistance and planning for the future through education, income, and health initiatives.”, said Raquel Painter, President of United Way of Onslow. I was born in Massachusetts, but we moved around quite a bit when I was growing up. Eventually, I settled down in Florida’s Tampa Bay area, where I met my wife, Krystal. This year will be our 10th wedding anniversary and mark 15 years together. We have been blessed to be able to travel, experience other cultures, and make friends all over the world. I earned my master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Florida. After spending 20 years in Florida, we moved to North Carolina to be closer to my immediate family. Whether they worked with her, taught with her, volunteered with her or served with her, friends and colleagues of longtime educator and public servant Pam Thomas remembered one thing: her love for Onslow County. “Pam was a pillar of our community, a mentor and a leader,” Onslow County Board of Education member Ken Reddic said. Onslow County’s education community lost a great advocate with Thomas’ death and the community as a whole lost a great public servant, Reddic said. Thomas, who was admitted to the hospital in late November after being diagnosed with COVID-19, died early Sunday morning. Thomas worked as a teacher, coach and supervisor with Onslow County Schools for 34 years and after her retirement was elected to the Board of Education. She joined the school board in 2004 and served as chairman from 2010 until her final term, which ended this month. ....
