kstephens@altoonamirror.com HOLLIDAYSBURG Blair County started mailing ballots Monday to 5,558 county residents who sought to vote by mail in the May 18 primary. The option, embraced last year by about 16,000 county voters interested in avoiding COVID-19 risks and in casting ballots in the hotly contested presidential race, is attracting some interest this year for the upcoming primary. That’s when Republican and Democratic voters will select candidates for state judicial, county, municipal and school board posts, and when all registered voters can weigh in on four statewide ballot questions. Blair County mailed letters in February to about 15,000 registered voters who last year indicated an interest in receiving future applications to vote by mail, Director of Elections Sarah Seymour told the elections board at its recent meeting. ....
pray@altoonamirror.com A fund created by the Blair County commissioners to aid with the removal of blighted properties will receive more money as of July 1, according to action taken by the county board on Thursday. The commissioners doubled a fee collected by the Blair County Recorder of Deeds on all mortgages and deeds recorded in the county office. The present fee is $7.50, but as of July 1, it will be $15 per document. That increase means the charge on filing a deed transfer or mortgage will go from $79.25 to $86.75. Revenue from the fee increase will be earmarked for the “County of Blair Demolition Fund,” which was initiated in 2019 to address blight in area communities. ....

Lisa Hann, executive director of Family Services Inc., approached the Blair County commissioners Tuesday asking them to provide a “Letter of Support” for the agency’s bid to obtain $250,000 in tax credits through the state Department of Community and Economic Development. The credits, Hann stated, would be awarded through the Neighborhood Assistance Special Priorities Tax Credit Program. Hann and others have been planning for several years to open a new homeless shelter because its former shelter had only 16 beds, well short of meeting the present-day need. ....
pray@altoonamirror.com The Blair County commissioners said Tuesday they are poised to join a statewide effort to upgrade the 911 emergency call system, which locally has been in use for 25 years. Blair County Public Safety Director Mark Taylor told Commissioners Bruce R. Erb, Laura Burke and Amy Webster that the project known as Next Generation 911 is something the county could not afford to do on its own. He presented the county board with a Letter of Engagement that will go to the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, the organization that has oversight of efforts to replace existing systems where the equipment is near the end of its life expectancy. ....
