Pluridens serpentis, became extinct around 66 million years ago. Scientists from the United Kingdom, France, and Morocco reconstructed this new species from “…two complete skulls and referred jaws.” Based on their reconstruction, the Pluridens serpentis was believed to have measured as long as 8 meters (26 feet). This is staggering as the majority of the species’ relatives only grew to about a few meters in length. It had “elongate and robust jaws, small teeth, and specialized tooth implantation” that would have helped it to catch small prey. Additionally, it wouldn’t have been able to see very far because it had such small eyes. According to the study, it probably “relied on nonvisual cues including touch and chemoreception during foraging, as in modern marine snakes.”

Bighorn Basin Residents Asked to Spot & Report Spiny Turtles Written by Andrew-Rossi on May 19, 2021 As part of an ongoing research study, biologists with Wyoming Game and Fish are asking Bighorn Basin residents to report sightings of a rare turtle. The spiny softshell turtle is one of the largest turtles in the Bighorn Basin and North America. They have a soft, flat, rubbery outer shell, and females can grow up to 20 inches long – twice as large as males. While common in several U.S. states, these turtles have one of the greatest conservation needs in Wyoming due to their restricted range. Although populations are thought to be stable in eastern Wyoming, the public, local landowners, and regional biologists have reported declines throughout the Bighorn Basin.

The City of Key West reminds residents and visitors to keep the lights out near the beaches so turtles can lay their eggs and the hatchlings can find their way safely to the water. Hatchlings naturally head toward light, so anyone living near the beach is asked to turn off outdoor lighting and close your shades or curtains, if possible. Baby turtles are drawn to light after they hatch from their sandy nests. Porch lights can be fatal to these hatchlings. Key Westâs beaches are closed to the public each night at 11, and this time of year itâs vital that people heed the law. Turtle nesting season runs from April 15 through Oct. 31.
