How Tennessee may spend $30 billion in aid from American Rescue Plan

Tennessee stands to receive $6.1 billion in direct aid under President Joe Biden s American Rescue Plan, which was signed into law Thursday afternoon amid opposition from Republican governors and lawmakers.
Combined with aid for hard-hit tourism businesses, rent and mortgage assistance, education and other relief funds allocated by the plan, Tennessee is expected to receive more than $30 billion.
The $1.9 trillion act includes $350 billion in direct aid for states and cities, allocated based on the number of unemployed citizens in each state at the end of 2020. Each locality s legislative bodies and elected officials will choose how to distribute these funds. ....

Tennessee s last three governors  two Republicans and a Democrat  will take part in a discussion next week on the national debt, along with how their own fiscally conservative approaches to governing stand in contrast to budgets passed in Washington.
Gov. Bill Lee and former Govs. Bill Haslam and Phil Bredesen have each agreed to participate in the Millennial Debt Foundation’s March 11 virtual  Stewardship Series in Nashville. The nonprofit, nonpartisan organization launched in Tennessee in 2019 and is holding similar events this year in other states, including Texas, Florida and Wisconsin. ....
