Heavy industry contaminants have not been detected in drinking water or hangi pit soils around Whareroa Marae following initial sampling, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council said today.
Last month the council confirmed it was investigating reports PFAS compounds had been recorded in groundwater in Mount Maunganui s industrial area, on a site near the marae. It became aware of this following receipt of a consent application where PFAS was identified as part of the supporting contaminated land assessment.
PFAS are a large group of man-made compounds that are widely used globally in a range of consumer and industrial applications. ....

Turkey Reports Nearly 26,000 New Coronavirus Cases
More than 75,000 recoveries, 340 virus linked deaths also confirmed over past 24 hours.
Turkey reported nearly 26,000 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, the Health Ministry said.
A total of 25,980 infections, including 2,587 symptomatic patients, were confirmed in the last 24 hours.
Turkey s overall COVID-19 tally is now over 4.87 million, while the nationwide death toll rose by 340 over the past day to reach 40,844.
As many as 75,182 more patients won the battle against the virus, taking the total number of recoveries past 4.48 million.
More than 47.74 million coronavirus tests have been conducted to date, with 240,145 done since Saturday.
The latest figures show that the number of COVID-19 patients in critical condition stands at 3,532. ....

U.S. Trade Deficit Nearly Matches Estimates In March
WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - A report released by the Commerce Department on Tuesday showed the U.S. trade deficit widened in the month of March.
The Commerce Department said the trade deficit widened to $74.4 billion in March from a revised $70.5 billion in February.
The trade deficit was nearly in line with estimates, as economists had expected the deficit to widen to $74.5 billion from the $71.1 billion originally reported for the previous month.
The wider trade deficit came as the value of imports surged up by 6.3 percent to $274.5 billion, while the value of exports spiked by 6.6 percent to $200.0 billion. ....
