Allegations of 'fraud, incompetence' against DG rock Nigerian research institute

Controversy has trailed the alleged planned reappointment of Folarin Gbadebo-Smith as the Director General of Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER) Ibadan, Oyo State.
The workers of the institute are accusing Mr Gbadebo-Smith of “administrative incompetence, fraud, and low research output” in the past four years.
They protested on the streets of Ibadan on Tuesday.
This newspaper obtained a 10 page petition of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) addressed to the governing council of the institute on March 19.
The petition was signed by the Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Research Institutions, Muyiwa Babatimehin; Chairman, Senior Staff Association of Universities, Teaching Hospitals and Research Institutions, Mathew Olagunju; and Chairman, Non-Academic Staff Union, Theophilus Tubi. ....

14 Faculty Named 2021-2022 University Research Professors

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 4, 2021) At the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees meeting on May 4, University Research Professorship Awards to 14 faculty members were announced. These awards recognize excellence in research and creative work that addresses scientific, social, cultural, economic and health challenges in our region and around the world.
The University Research Professorships were established by the UK Board of Trustees in 1976 to recognize outstanding research achievements. The professorships program recognizes excellence across the full spectrum of research, scholarship and creative endeavors within each college at UK. College leadership developed criteria for excellence within their area of expertise, and then nominated faculty who excelled at these criteria. Each University Research Professor receives a one-year award of $10,000 to be used to further their research, scholarship and creative endeavors. ....

“The new draft law establishes a contracting system to regulate the relationship between professors and their university, subjecting it to the logic of the market and privatisation in a way that undermines the principle of academic freedom and the independence of scholars,” said Jaouad Rabaa, a member of the National Office for the independent Karama (‘Dignity’) Coordination of Research Professors, in a phone call.
Rabaa, a professor of political science and constitutional law at the University of Ibn Zohr in Agadir, explained that the draft law granted “supreme” authority to the university’s administrative body and the ministry to control teachers’ financial benefits and work privileges. The bill also grants the ministry of higher education powers to amend the curricula and intervene in research professors’ work, says Rabaa. ....
