New water vapor condenser takes cues from darkling beetle

Qiaoqiang Gan, professor
Department of Electrical Engineering
Access to clean water is a huge issue across the globe. Even in areas with water resources, a lack of infrastructure or reliable energy means purifying that water is sometimes extremely difficult.
That’s why a water vapor condenser designed by engineers at UB and the University of Wisconsin-Madison could be revolutionary. Unlike other radiative vapor condensers that can only operate at night, the new design works in direct sunlight and requires no energy input.
“We have worked on solar-driven water evaporation technologies in the past years,” says Qiaoqiang Gan, UB professor of electrical engineering and a leading corresponding author. “We are now addressing the second half of the water cycle, condensation.” ....

UB computer scientists develop tool to spot deepfake photos - UB Now: News and views for UB faculty and staff

Siwei Lyu, SUNY Empire Innovation Professor
Department of Computer Science and Engineering
UB computer scientists have developed a tool that automatically identifies deepfake photos by analyzing light reflections in the eyes.
The tool proved 94% effective with portrait-like photos in experiments described in a paper accepted at the IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing to be held in June in Toronto.
“The cornea is almost like a perfect semisphere and is very reflective,” says lead author, Siwei Lyu, SUNY Empire Innovation Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. “So, anything that is coming to the eye with a light emitting from those sources will have an image on the cornea. ....

Faculty members co-edit book on handling surgical complications - UB Now: News and views for UB faculty and staff

Maciej L. Dryjski, professor
Department of Surgery
Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences faculty members Maciej L. Dryjski and Linda M. Harris have co-edited a book to help surgeons at all levels of training and practice manage and prevent complications that may occur in the operating room and angiography suites.
Dryjski and Harris, both professors of surgery, are co-editors of “Complications in Endovascular Surgery,” which was published by Elsevier in January and is available in hardcover and e-book form.
“This book is unique. There has never been a book in surgical literature addressing the perioperative complications during endovascular procedures,” says Dryjski, medical director of vascular and endovascular surgery at Kaleida Health. ....

With unfair police treatment, tragedy not limited to incident itself

Christopher Dennison, assistant professor
Department of Sociology
New research using a nationally representative sample of more than 12,000 participants shows the collateral consequences victims are likely to confront following unfair treatment by police.
Michael Brown, George Floyd and Tamir Rice are just some of those who have died recently at the hands of police.
Their names are now tragically familiar, but thousands of other people who are unjustly stopped, searched or questioned by law enforcement will likely experience a range of detrimental outcomes associated with unfair police treatment, including depression, suicidal thoughts, drug use and a loss of self-efficacy, according to Christopher Dennison, assistant professor of sociology, College of Arts and Sciences. ....
