The Greater Food Council is pleased to announce it has hired Deb Burd as a Program Coordinator to help advance its work.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Androscoggin Gleaners are looking for volunteers for the summer and fall growing season. We are affiliated with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension and Healthy Androscoggin, and work with local farms to harvest excess produce and put it into the hands of organizations that fill emergency food needs in our community.
We visit our farm partners on a regular basis to harvest for an hour and half to two hours before splitting up the harvest and delivering it to various food access sites in the area such as pantries, housing facilities, libraries and others. We provide all the training and tools required. Volunteers need only bring a willing spirit! ....

'The beginning of the end': Lewiston-Auburn gets shots as mall mass vaccination clinic opens

“That’s it,” Jordan said. Damien, 66, a Lewiston Public Works employee, grinned.
His first shot of the Moderna vaccine means “the beginning of the end,” Damien said. “We’re going to be able to be much closer to more people in the future. I’ve been very careful. I wear a mask. I don’t want to give it to anybody and I don’t want them giving it to me. We haven’t gone out much, haven’t been on vacation for a long time. I’m looking forward to that.”
He chuckled about being the first to get vaccinated at the clinic and the media coverage. “The guys at work will probably ride me a little,” he said. “I’m happy.” ....

St. Mary's Nutrition Center seeks volunteers for variety of tasks

DEAR SUN SPOTS: We at St. Mary’s Nutrition Center would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to our volunteers, longstanding and new, who helped and continue to help in crucial ways during this unusual time, specifically in our Food Pantry and the Community Garden.
These last several months have marked the engagement of many volunteers in a completely new way through their contributions to the deliveries arm of the Food Pantry. This new program distributes food to people who face barriers to visiting the pantry in-person and was developed last spring in response to COVID-19. We have built a pool of dedicated volunteer drivers to make deliveries and have launched a weekly newsletter with program highlights, announcements, and a link for drivers to sign up for shifts based on their availability. The Nutrition Center distributes around 400 meals per week. Over 9,250 bags of food were delivered to the community in 2020. ....
